Director, School of Geography and Development, University of Arizona
The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, University of Arizona, invites applications for the position of Director of the School of Geography and Development (SGD). The search is to remain open until the position is filled, but we would encourage anyone interested in being considered to send in application materials before November 1.
The Director is expected to advance the School’s mission by attracting, mentoring, and retaining the highest quality faculty, expanding and broadening the School’s research activities and funding, maintaining innovative educational programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and fostering public engagement and outreach. Field of specialization for this position is open, but preference will be given to candidates who have been broadly trained, who value the full range of theories and methods that geographers employ, who have strong commitments to interdisciplinary engagement, and who complement the School’s existing strengths. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Geography or related field, with academic achievements commensurate with appointment as a full professor with tenure; a distinguished record of scholarship and academic achievement, including mentoring students; and demonstrated leadership and administrative skills and experience. As a faculty member, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain a strong and productive research program, direct graduate research, exhibit excellence in graduate and undergraduate teaching, and demonstrate commitments to service to the university and public engagement and outreach.

The School is a vibrant and diverse working and learning environment, with 25 regular faculty, 25-30 adjunct and affiliated faculty, 220 undergraduate majors, and over 100 graduate and professional students. We offer four undergraduate degrees: BA and BS in Geography, BS in Regional Development, and BA in Environmental Studies, as well as undergraduate minors in Geography, Regional Development, Geographic Information Science, and Environmental Studies. We offer graduate degrees in Geography, both MA and PhD, and also two professional master’s degrees, in Geographic Information Systems Technology and in International Development Practice.
